Apple Watch Ultra 2 versus Ultra: Is it really time to upgrade?

Apple launched the first Apple Watch Ultra in 2022, aimed at the outdoor adventure market currently mastered by Garmin head and shoulders. This new Apple Watch Ultra 2 brings some minor improvements and software updates that were supposed to make it more attractive.

The case materials, which would be more environmentally friendly, have been announced. But this is still a minor development.

Looking at the characteristics compared below, there is not a single change.

1. you want a brighter screen

The original Apple Watch Ultra was launched with a screen with a brightness of 2,000 nits. In a year of use, I never thought I would need a brighter screen, even in direct sunlight. However, the Ultra 2 is now equipped with a screen with a brightness of 3,000 nits!

Since the Apple Watch Ultra is not equipped with an LED flashlight, increasing the brightness of the screen and offering a booster mode for the flashlight can offer a similar experience in dark conditions. You can assign the large Action button to the flashlight function, the screen will then be displayed in an entirely white light over its entire surface.

2. you want the latest processor from Apple

The most important modification of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the switch to Apple’s internal S9 processor. We will still have to check if there are significant improvements in the speed and responsiveness of the watch. But the original Watch Ultra has never experienced these types of problems, so it is unlikely that this is an obvious improvement.

Despite the new processor, the battery life remains unchanged with an announced lifespan of 36 hours. The brighter screen could have reduced this duration, while the S9 processor rebalances things.

3. you care about the environment

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is also made of titanium, just like the original Watch Ultra. However, it incorporates 95% recycled titanium. And if you buy the Watch Ultra 2 with an Alpine Loop or Trail Loop strap, your purchase will be carbon neutral, says Apple.

You should keep your Apple Watch Ultra though…

1. you don&#13t want to spend more money;

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is sold cheaper in France. You could resell your Apple Watch Ultra for a few hundred euros on some sites and complete to acquire the new Watch Ultra 2.

I wrote a little while ago, before its official presentation, my expectations regarding the Apple Watch Ultra 2: the LED lamp, the sending of emergency messages by satellite, the more complete display of training status data. But after seeing the announcement, it is clear that I am not interested in buying it this year.

2. your Watch Ultra has character

The day after my Apple Watch Ultra arrived, I went out and ran a Tough Mudder. Although the screen came out of this torture in perfect condition, there were some minor scratches around the bezel. Over the past year, my Watch Ultra has suffered some scratches and some wear, which adds to the ultra-robust appearance of the watch.

If you have traces of combat on your Watch Ultra, keep it to tell stories and give up the latest model, because the improvements are minor. Take your turn.
