Are you buying an iPhone 15 but still want your Lightning port? Apple has a dongle for you

Here is the USB-C-to-Lightning dongle for €35. Apple/ZDNET

The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro have been unveiled, and here is the new connectivity side. First of all, USB-C is better than Lightning, now that Apple has been forced to adopt the standard.

Who would have thought it? Well, I think most of us already knew that.

But getting rid of a port, whether by choice or because Apple has to comply with European legislation, is an opportunity to sell customers another dongle.

This dongle will also work with iPad and iPad Pros

Apple likes dongles and, as expected, here is the USB-C dongle to Ligtning. At €35.

The dongle has a “braided cable for durability” and supports charging up to 24 W. According to Apple, this dongle allows users to connect Lightning accessories to a USB-C compatible iPhone or iPad in order to support three functions: charging, data and audio.

In addition to the return of the Lightning port on the new iPhone 15, this dongle will also work with the iPad and iPad Pros which were the first to switch to USB-C a few years ago.

Towards a generalization of USB-C to Lightning dongles

Many of you are wondering if a dongle – or a new car – is needed for CarPlay to work.

Good news. According to Apple, although you can use the USB-C to Lightning dongle with wired CarPlay “in most vehicles”, “certain combinations of adapters, cables and vehicle entertainment systems” can cause problems with the wired CarPlay connection. In this case, you can use a USB cable to connect your car directly to the USB-C port of the iPhone 15.

This is a roundabout way of saying that it is probably better to use a cable rather than the dongle.

I also expect the market to be flooded with cheaper versions of this dongle. Although I avoid cheap and generic products, I expect that the big names in the accessory will offer something similar at a slightly lower price than that offered by Apple for this dongle.
