Google Sheets is enriched with an AI, but you will have to pay to use it

2023 is the year of AI, and if you are a regular Google Sheets user, you will soon benefit from AI-assisted support. But only if you are willing to pay for it.

Google Sheets is the free spreadsheet application of the office suite developed by Google, accessible from a Google Drive account or from the mobile application for Android and iOS.

Several years ago, Google had added a “smart fill” function to Sheets that automatically learns what the user regularly types and automatically predicts and fills in what will follow. For example, if a user is working with two columns of names, “Smart Fill” can learn that he is transferring names from one column to another and automatically fill in the rest.

Today, Google is rolling out the “Enhanced Smart Fill” function. Unfortunately, this feature is only available to Google Duet subscribers, who are willing to shell out $30 a month.

Automatic detection of the relationships between the data contained in the cells

This feature, announced by the company in a blog post “Workspace Updates”, is designed to help users spend less time manually organizing and analyzing data in Sheets. It comes in addition to other artificial intelligence functions of Google Workplace, such as “Help Me Write” for Google Docs and “Help Me Organize” for Sheets.

Thanks to AI, Sheets will now automatically detect if there is a relationship between the data contained in the cells. If so, Duet will make a “pop-up suggestion” and ask if you want to accept the new values. For now, Google says the improved smart fill will help format addresses, structure phone numbers and emails, condense text, and more.

Google presented some examples of this technology, pointing out that a sales team could use it to more easily organize the next steps of a sales cycle instead of manually extracting the next steps from the notes of a column, or that a charity could use it to write personalized thank you notes for donors based on their type of donation.

The enhanced smart fill is automatically enabled in Google Sheets and should be available now for all Duet users.
