No, batteries have not conquered the world yet. I still use AA batteries for a lot of things. There are still them everywhere in my house, in my remote controls, flashlights, alarms and other devices.

Among all the things for which I use AA batteries, there is one that is very important: the power supply of the wireless microphones that I use to shoot videos. These batteries must last for a long time, and I also need to have some as backup, so that I will never be deprived of energy for these microphones.

I tried my luck with a USB charger from the Powerowl brand. I had never heard of this brand, but it was at the height of the Covid pandemic and I couldn’t find any others. The batteries of this brand had more than 10,000 reviews with an average of 4.5 stars. The price was also perfect (currently they are at € 29) and I was thinking that, anyway, they could serve me as an extra if they weren’t perfect.

When the batteries arrived, I charged them, then I inserted a pair into my microphone and another into the receiver and started filming. To my surprise, the batteries lasted much longer than I could expect from an unknown brand.

The technical characteristics of the USB charger from Powerowl

Here are the details you need to make up your mind:

  • each battery can be recharged more than 1,200 times, while maintaining a 70% charge after a period of inuse (up to three years).
  • Full recharge in 10 hours.
  • Operating temperatures — from -10°C to 45°C.
  • Storage temperatures — from -10°C to 40°C.
  • Indicator light: red in the process of charging, green in the process of charging, flashing green if the battery is damaged and orange if the input voltage is too low.
  • Input, DC 5V 2A and output, DC 1.4V 250mAh AA/1.4V 250mAh AAA.
  • Overload and short circuit protection.
  • High capacity 2800mAh Ni-MH batteries with low self-discharge for a long service life.
  • Includes eight batteries, a docking station and a US cable.
  • Ten-year service life.
  • The charger can charge one or all eight batteries simultaneously.

The autonomy of the batteries after a full charge depends on the use that is made of them. My wireless microphones can usually run out of batteries quickly, but I was able to shoot for about four hours on a single charge. In my experience with batteries, this is an exceptional performance.

Of course, the autonomy of these batteries will vary according to the use of the products to be powered. But if you are looking for a set of reliable rechargeable batteries, accompanied by a practical charger, you could not do better. In fact, according to my observation, these batteries tend to outperform brand rechargeable batteries in terms of charging time and performance.
